There was a hotly debated report in Jansatta in Delhi on the 8th of January, 2010 on a discussion during the symposium on censorship during the National Theatre Festival in the National School of Drama (NSD) in Delhi. The initial report in Hindi and Sahmat's reply are attached below.
Translations of the relevant passages from the report:
" During the symposium 'Theatre and Censorship' attended by theatre artists, specialists etc from across the nation, differences came out into the open. Going beyond the question of censorship on theatre, the discussion got diverted into a debate on the eminent painter MF Husain, Tasleema Nasrin, West Bengal's Left Front government, Delhi's Hindi Academy, Left forces and SAHMAT. "
" Publisher Ritu Menon said that we keep talking about and focussing on censorship imposed by right-wing groups. We never talk of censorship imposed by left wing groups which is no less pernicious. She asked why actor MK Raina and SAHMAT had never picked up the issue of Tasleema Nasrin. She said this was a carefully thought out political strategy to defend Husain and ignore Tasleema. "
Translation of SAHMAT's reply published on January 11th, 2010:
TASLEEMA AND SAHMAT
In Jansatta's report of the 8th of January on "A Debate on Censorship" it is stated: " She (Publisher Ritu Menon) asked why actor MK Raina and SAHMAT had never picked up the issue of Tasleema Nasrin. She said this was a carefully thought out political strategy to defend Husain and ignore Tasleema. "
The publisher's statement is not based on facts. SAHMAT had come out in for the first time defence of Tasleema Nasrin in 1994, and led a demonstration in her defence to the Bangladesh high commission on July 8th, 1994. Perhaps at that time the publisher had no interest in Tasleema. After that on 9th of August 2007, when Tasleema was assaulted by Muslim fundamentalist groups in Hyderabad, SAHMAT had issued a statement condemning the attack.
After this SAHMAT had issued two statements in support of Tasleema. The first on 23rd November 2007 when Tasleema was forced to leave Kolkata and the other on 13th February 2008 when the question of the issuance of a visa to Tasleema had become an issue. These statements, as often happens, were carried only in the Hindi press, and perhaps because the publisher's familiarity with the Hindi press is scant, they did not come to her attention. All these statements are posted on the SAHMAT website and can also be read in English.
